Technology) in Zurich gave the assignment to study the health of leaf bugs in Switzerland to a student of zoology (Dr. J. Jenny), to be presented as a dissertation. I was happy to contribute by painting any deformed leaf bugs he gave me. As the work progressed — and his publications on the topic began appearing before his research had been completed — I realized that his research was, to put it mildly, incomplete and lacking. The media was happy to report that a scientific study had shown that leaf bugs had not been harmed by Swiss nuclear power plants — that I was wrong. The president of the ETH asked me to surrender and admit defeat. I therefore started a study on my own which lasted until 1996. At each of 40 different collection points, selected at random, I gathered 65 Heteroptera leaf bugs. I catalogued all the deformities I found, for all the affected body parts, such as head,
