After the catastrophe in
the nuclear power plant of Chernobyl had been made public,
the measurements of radioactivity taken in Sweden showed
that the highest contamination was found in the schoolyard
of the town Oesterfaernebo, a small village about 100
kilometers north of Uppsala. The fact that the scientists
quoted in the media always downplayed the danger of irradiation,
which is not detectable with our senses, made me suspicious.
In the summer of 1987 I decided to make my first trip
to the area contaminated by the radioactivity of the
Chernobyl cloud. I wanted to see with my own eyes how
the offspring of insects in the fallout areas of Chernobyl
had fared. In Gysinge and Oesterfaernebo I collected
my first morphologically disturbed Heteroptera leaf bugs.
They had feelers the shape of sausages; their larvae had divided |
