Chernobyl

Ticino, Switzerland
In the fall of 1987 I studied Heteroptera true bugs in the Ticino, which the radioactive clouds from Chernobyl reached in early May 1986, and which washed out during heavy rains. At the beginning of May 1986, the first generation of true bugs was in its larval state; these larvae sucked the liquid from the plants which were contaminated. At Mendrisiotto I found disturbed true bugs and deformed plants, which I collected and painted. In Rancate I collected three pairs of Drosophila melanogaster flies, which I bred in my kitchen up to the fourth generation. With the binocular microscope I studied and protocolled them. I found the greatest number of deformities on their abdomens, wings, eyes and faces. [ 1 ] [ 3 ]
